What is a temperature blanket?

Temperature blankets (or thermometer, sky, or weather blankets) are worked up one row or square each day for a year. The color yarn or fabric you use each day is based on, you guessed it, the weather!

You'll use a temperature blanket chart like the ones included below to choose your blanket colors. Then you'll use the daily high temperature in your region to create the blanket.

Some people like to work up the project as a New Year's Resolution to crochet or sew all year! Others like to choose a meaningful year, such as the year you were married or that a child was born, and pull the weather history from a site like Wunderground.

You can find a TON of inspiration and planning resources at the fabulous temperature-blanket.com. You can also join the Temperature/Weather Blanket community on Facebook for great inspiration, to share monthly progress, and to get your questions answered.

This pattern will give you all the information you need to plan out your own temperature blanket or a historical temperature blanket for a special year – such as a child’s first year, anniversary, year of a wedding, etc. When January rolls around, knitters and crocheters see temperature blankets popping up all over Pinterest, Ravelry, Instagram and Facebook groups. One Saturday morning last January I was browsing Pinterest and fell into the rabbit hole of temperature blankets while enjoying my morning coffee. I was inspired! Off to Michael’s I went and a few hours later I was starting my first row in my blanket. I’m happy to share with you how I made mine in hopes it inspires you to make one of your own."

Adding Up Memories Temperature Blanket
by Rachel Hill from ravinsdesigns.com

From the designer: "This is my version of a temperature blanket! Using the basic granny square and pairing it with different color combos depending on the temperature and you get this adorable queen sized blanket. It’s perfect for snuggling up under on cold nights, and with the Continuous Flat Braid Join, it really has a gorgeous heirloom feel to it. For this blanket, I used Caron One Pound, which is an aran weight 4 yarn. This yarn works up quickly and gets so squishy and soft after washing it. But, you can use any type of yarn for this blanket. Pick a DK weight for a smaller and lighter blanket or go all out on the squish factor with bulky weight yarn to get an extra huge extra snuggly one! Gauge isn’t super important for this one, but make sure you check how large your squares PLUS border are coming out to so you can get a good feel of how large your final blanket will be!"

Perfectly Patchy Temperature Crochet Baby Blanket
by Dana Nield from dananield.com

From the Designer: "Learn how to crochet a temperature blanket for babies! The perfectly patchy temperature crochet baby blanket pattern is a small temperature blanket that you can make for a new arrival.

My patchy baby blanket is small and works up fast. The key: you work this blanket in one column per month, and you join each month as you go. No seaming!

The body of the blanket is worked with half double crochet in the back loop only to create the beautiful ridges. I also love the herringbone half double crochet border and have used it on a few projects. I think the texture is just gorgeous when this stitch is worked in continuous rounds.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!"

Crochet Temperature Afghan Pattern
by Mikey from thecrochetcrowd.com

From the designer: "If you have never heard of a Temperature Afghan, it’s pretty straight forward. You commit to crocheting 1 – 3 rows/rounds of your work using the temperature gauge as your colour choice each day. So you can either check your temperature outside of your home or refer to the weather network each day and crochet accordingly. If you think you are not going to crochet for a day, just take the temperature and write it down so when you pick up your project, you have that information handy."

A Temperature Project SAL For Everyone Who Has Never Actually Finished a Temperature Blanket or Scarf
by Marly from marlybird.com and Mikey from thecrochetcrowd.com

From the designers: "I haven’t finished a temperature blanket and I know that I never will in the traditional way. That’s why we’re thinking that a temperature season-along is a better idea. Mikey designed on a crochet blanket that is just beautiful. He went with non-traditional colors in a chevron stitch pattern that keeps the crocheter interested AND is absolutely stunning. Like most knitters, I don’t have any interest in knitting a blanket so I designed a knit temperature scarf with bulky yarn! Which means the project is quick, low time commitment, and completely giftable!"

Personalized Temperature Scarf
by Marie Segares of undergroundcrafter.com

This is a truly unique crochet scarf pattern because everyone's will look different based on the color yarns you choose and how dramatic the weather changes in your area. Once you've chosen your yarn colors, you'll then assign each color to a set of temperature values and change colors at the end of every row (or whenever the weather changes). How to Make a Temperature Quilt

Temperature Quilt

I’ll walk you through the process I used to plan, track, create, and finish this wall hanging, and I’ll also share the resource I used to follow the weather. Adding the weather-themed corners to the sashing and big stitch binding to the front really added a lot of character to this quilt!"
