Homemade Crochet Skeleton Beanie
Even though your baby might be too little to fit in a costume, it doesn't mean he or she should miss out on any Halloween fun. Crochet baby hat patterns are great simple "costumes" for baby, and this Homemade Crochet Skeleton Beanie may just be what you need to get your little one warmed up to dressing up. Materials:
- 5mm (H) hook & 4mm (6) hook. If you don’t have a 4mm hook use a 4.25mm (G) hook.
- Double knit (8ply) – white & Black
- Stitch marker
- Wool needle
Abbreviations:
- At the end of each round just carry on.
- Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
- HK - hook
- CH - chain
- SS – Slip Stitch
- SC – Single crochet
- SC Inc – Single Crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 sc in 1 stitch.
- SC Dec – Single Crochet Decrease. Hook through 1st stitch, yarn over hook, pull hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook, pull through. Yarn over hook and through all the loops.
- HDC – half double crochet
- HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
- HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease. Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through. Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.
- DC – Double crochet
- DC Inc - Double crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 dc in 1 stitch
- DC Dec – Double crochet decrease. Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, yarn over hook, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through. Yarn over hook and pull through 1st 2 loops, yarn over hook and through all the hoops left.
Gauge:
- 7 sts & 6 rows = 2”
- If your hat is coming out too big go down one hook size and vice versa if it’s too small.

Hat
- Using 5mm (H) hook and white yarn.
- Ch 2 (or use magic circle)
- Round 1) 6 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook (6)
- Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12)
- Round 3) *1 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (18)
- Round 4) *2 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (24)
- Round 5) *3 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (30)
- Round 6) *4 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (36)
- Round 7) *5 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (42)
- Round 8) *6 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (48)
- Round 9) *7 hdc, 1 hdc inc * x 6 (54)
- Round 10) *8 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (60) (1 -3 yrs go to round 13)
- Round 11) *9hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (66) (3 – 10yrs go to row 13)
- Round 12) *10 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (72)
- Round 13) hdc around (66) (1 – 3 yrs 60, 3 – 10 yrs 66, 10 yrs+ 72)
- You need another 13 rounds for each of the sizes.
- (Total quantity of rounds 1 – 3 yrs 24, 3 – 10 yrs 25, 10 yrs+ 26)
- When you have finished the above slip stitch x 2, finish.
Eyes
- Black yarn & 4mm hook
- Ch 2
- Round 1) 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hook (carry on moving marker to the start of each round, no ss required) (6)
- Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12)
- Round 3) *1 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (18)
- Round 4) *2 hdc, 2 hdc inc* x 6, 2 ss (in the next round), finish (leave enough yarn to attach to the hat) (26)
- Using White Yarn and yarn needle -put a cross in the middle of the eye
Nose
- Using Black yarn & Yarn needle – create nostrils with 2 lines of black yarn in the middle of the face
Mouth
- Using Black yarn & yarn needle – create mouth. First Make the shape of the mouth itself & then put lines down and across the mouth to make it look like a skeleton mouth.
