I'm lucky so many of you have already made this and put in your reviews so I don't have to go through the same problems while making this hat. If your mother loves gardening then this is a great gift, even for you too. It keeps the sun off your face, especially in the summer afternoons and looks stylish.

I have recently been on a kick making hats in any shape or form. This is a pattern I will definitely use, as it looks simple enough to whip them out but also with a little bit of flair. My aunt had cancer and was looking for a hat similar to this when she lost her hair, so in her memory I will be making a few to donate!

I love the concept of wearing a garden hat and theses look beautiful. The brim is just the right size to keep the sun off my face and neck. This pattern did come out quite large for the adult size. I tore it out and made the child size and it fits. LOL I guess I have a small head. I tried uploading a picture of my hat but it wouldn't load..? I'll be making a few more of these in different colors to wear this summer. Great hat for anyone who needs to keep the sun off your face and neck. Oh- I almost forgot- I used a heavy gauge jewelry wire and singled crocheted over it on the last round of the brim so it doesn't come out so flappy.. Thank you so much for sharing this free crochet pattern.

I adore these hats. You can make these hats for either little girls or big girls. I whipped up the white one, only I did mine in pink, with a white band and purple flower. I love it, and I did the yellow one for my granddaughter. Who is just like her Meme and loves her hats. I appreciate all the free and easy patterns, thank you!

i found this to be huge no matter what yarn i used so after experimenting i found that staying on the 5 dc between fpdc to round 14 then doing 6 then 7 before adding brim made the hat a much nicer size i used an E hook. if you search on this site there are several flower patterns

I can't believe some people - I counted 17 people asking what a fpdc is! I would suggest you read the other comments before entering your question. To the 17 people who don't know what a fpdc is - read the answer given to the first person who asked!

I have been making crochet blankets for years, but flat things is all I can do? I wish I could do some baby clothes, hats, sweaters etc! I find the instructions hard to understand. What does BEG 2 and FP stand for.?

I love the look of these hats, but I've ripped out the gauge swatch FOUR times. Finally got the gauge right (using a J hook), got through to round 13, and it was the sorriest looking hat EVER. In between the FPdc columns, it puffs out and in (really wavy). When I do the first 8 rows (the increasing rows), it doesn't bowl, like the picture. It works into a flat circle. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Any and all tips are appreciated! Thanks.

FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet. Go to YouTube and search. You will find many tutorials on how to do this. Crochet by Teresa is one of my favorites.

Regarding the hat pattern I think you used too big of a crochet needle as I first did Not sure which size you were trying as I'm just starting on a second ball and am nearly done with the brim So it definitely sounds like the hook you're using is too big that happened to me with a different hat pattern so I learned from that As for the hat being floppy I started looking up how to stiffen a crochet hat and found numerous web pages on it such as http www crochetmemories com crochet php Good luck The designer also made corrections to the pattern so make sure you go to her website to see the gauge FPDC Front Post Double Crochet I'm working on a hat for my daughter right now The hook listed for children was TOO SMALL for the acrylic DK yarn I was doing so…Read More small that the yarn kept splitting The hat turned out a little on the big side but once I use the stiffener I think it'll be okay

I am disapapointed in my hat. It is too flimsy. And even though I did the guage swatch it turned out way to big. I should have done the sm or med. Maybe I will try them both and see what happens but not unless I figure out how to make it stiff and the brim to stand up/or out. Anybody got any ideas???Please email me. djren28@aol.com P.S. it also took 3 balls of yarn not 2. I am wondering what I did wrong. I do love the yarn though, its Tahki Classic Cotton Would be great for a tank top or anything summery.

I would suggest that you use a stiffner. You can buy it at most any craft stores. I got mine at Walmart.

I think I was mis-understanding what the word beg meant. I think now it just means begin with a 2 dc cluster. Does anyone think that is right? I can get the simplest things very complicated. Its just that its hard when you don't know the crochet language very well, yet. Thanks Marcyc...Your info helped me a lot. I haven't tried it yet so am not sure if its correct, but think it is. Maybe someone else will tell us. I'll let you know if I ever get it finished. It is running very large as someone else said. I hope someone knows how to make the pattern smaller. Donna

No - If you look in the list of abbreviations a beg dc cluster is ch3 dc in the same stitch.

The designer didn't include the flower pattern as a free pattern. You can purchase the flower pattern in her Etsy shop.

Made two hats with poppys already. Love them! had a little trouble with beg. clusters too, but figured it out. Do the hats tend to run a liggle large. Both of mine were really big. How could I adjust the pattern so it doesn't get so wide at the bottom?

Please share what you figured out for the beg clusters and the 2dc cluster. I got through with no problems until I got to the brim. I've been at a stand still ever since. I'd love to finish this before summer is over!

To Donna (djren28) - I too am confused with the Beg 2-dc cluster. Looked online and found this pattern which has something similar: http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/Patterns/ribbonandroses.php Makes me think that the Beg 2-dc cluster is ch 3 and then 2 dc cluster - (*yo, insert hook in st or space indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook, rep from * once more, yo and draw through last 2 loops on hook) in the same stitch? Can anyone else tell me if this is right?

I am having trouble with understanding the first row of the brim...what does (beg 2-dc cluster mean exactly...I know it says Beg 2-dc cluster - work (ch 3, dc) together I am still not getting it. Must be too simple for me...LOL...Can someone put it in some other words to describe it...Thanks, Donna
