Sew Easy Skirt Tote
Learn how to turn an old skirt and belt into a fashionable and fun bag with this Sew Easy Skirt Tote tutorial. Recycled crafts are great for cleaning out your closet, and this fun and easy tote would be great for toting anything and everything.
Materials:
- Old skirt
- Old belt
- Sewing machine and supplies
- Scissors
- Fabric pins
Instructions:
-
Go thrift store shopping. Or yard sale-ing. Or root through your closet. And find a cute little mini skirt and a belt that no one is wearing. I've made these using adult size skirts-this tutorial features a child size skirt. If you go with an adult size, I recommend staying with a small size as the larger sizes tend to get too wide for the length-which will just make your bag very awkward.
-
Turn the skirt inside out and sew the bottom of the skirt together. I sewed this seam twice to reinforce it.
-
Sew a triangle at the bottom corners of your bag. This will help to give it more of a base.
-
Prepare your belt. I had to take a seam ripper to mine to take it apart and remove the hardware. (Save the hardware, you can use it in another project.) Then, I cut my belt in half.
- Pin your new handles to your bag. Usually I carefully measure everything. Today I just eyeballed it and pinned them in place. Sew the handles in place and you are done!

This looks like a trip down memory lane, but as mentioned below, with slacks or jeans rather than a skirt. You can really go,wild, with this project and add studs, rhinestones, pearls, or glass seed beads around the seam lines or pockets for some super bling and extra personalization! A fun and practical idea!

Okay teens. Do you see this. Let's dig out those pants or skirts that you do not fit in anymore and gather some old belts(you may get together with your friends and hit her closet too ) and see what you come up with. This is a great way to learn how to sew and get creative and have some fun. Now let's take them to school and listen to all the OOOOOO,s and AWWWWWW's. Your friends will envy you. This is a very good tutorial.

I guess I am missing something but the picture sure doesn't look like a skirt. It look so Ike's pair pants, men's pants. i don't have any skirts with flies down the front. That being said, it's a cute idea. I really don't do much sewing. I do everything but that. Closest is lining my hand crochet purses.

I see a trip to the goodwill in my future!!!! If you wanted a lined one with pockets you could always buy two skirts and sew them together (wrong sides facing when finished of course) or you could buy pretty fabric and simply make a lining to fit and add pockets that way. Either way a really pretty and fun project. My little sister is learning to sew and this would be an awesome project for her to learn on....on my heavy duty machine :).

Simple and useful. I have been making these all summer. Mine are a bit more complicated cause I put in an inside lining that has multiple pockets.
