No Knit Felt Mittens
Felt an old sweater to create some fantastic no-knit mittens this winter. These mittens are simple to create with a traced pattern. Idea by Progressive Pioneer Amy Thompson.
Materials:
- Felted Wool Sweater (Follow these instructions to felt an old wool sweater or thrift store find)
- Sewing Machine and thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Paper
- Pencil
Instructions:
You know how short mittens always sneak out of the jacket sleeve and leave that chilly bit of wrist exposed? I hate that! So, some extra-long, near-elbow-length mittens were in order.
I had Sam (mitten recipient) lay his hand on some paper and did a loose outline of his little paw. I dug into my felted wool box and found a snugly grey and blue sweater just right for winter mittens. With the outline pinned to the sleeve of the sweater I cut loosely around it leaving enough for a seam.
I kept the paper pinned to the wool to use as a guide and just zigzagged around it. Hopefully if you try some mittens like this you'll remember to reverse the fabric on both mittens, not just one like I did! But regardless of the mismatch patterns Sam seemed pretty pleased with his new mittens and wore them around the house all afternoon.

I have made these mittens too. They're a great way to recyle an old sweater. I added another step.... I used fleece to line them to make them even warmer. Old wool clothes makes them even warmer. Gail
