Butterfly Bookmark

Materials:

• Fuseworks™ Microwave Kiln
• Fuseworks™ Kiln Paper
• Fuseworks™ Bug-A-Boo Decal
• Fuseworks™ White Opalescent Sheet Glass
• Fuseworks™ Blue Dichroic Sheet Glass
• Fuseworks™ Glass Cutter
• E6000® or other glass glue
• 2 - Fancy Silver Tube Beads 8mmx6mm
• 1 - 4mm Silver Beaded Rondelle/Spacers
• 1 - 6mm Silver Beaded Rondelle/Spacers
• 2 – 5x3.5 mm Silver Corrugated Saucer Beads/Spacers
• 2 – 25” lengths Satin Rattail 2mm – Black Cord
  
   

Instructions:

1. Measure and cut 1 ¼” x 1” rectangles from both the white and dichroic glass.
    
2. Clean glass using paper towel moistened with water. Completely dry the surface of the glass with a lint free cloth.
    
3. Cut the desired decal to fit the surface of the dichroic glass.Place decal in water (preferably distilled) for approximately 30 seconds. Position the backing-paper against the dichroic side of the glass. The decal should slide off backing-paper easily. Use a paper towel to pat the moisture from the decal and glass. Should air bubbles appear, push them out with your finger. Allow to dry completely.
   
    
    
4. Cut a 2” X 2” piece of kiln paper and three ¼” x 1 ½” strips. Remove the lid from the Fuseworks™ Kiln. Place the 2” X 2” piece of kiln paper on the kiln base.
    
5. Place the white glass in the center of the kiln paper. Center the three strips atop one another in the center of the white glass. Cover with the dichroic glass.
   
   
   
    
    
6. Carefully set the base with glass inside the microwave. Cover base and glass with kiln lid.
   
    
    
7. If using a 1200-watt microwave, fuse at 50% power for 2 minutes. If using a microwave with a lower wattage, increase the time to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. PLEASE NOTE: All microwave and kiln combinations will have different firing patterns. Be sure to take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use. Then fuse at 80% for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
   
    
    
8. When time has expired, open microwave and, using Hot Mitts, carefully lift the lid enough to inspect the fusing process. Glass should have nicely round edges. If need be, add additional time in 15 to 30 second increments until the desired results are achieved. Remove kiln from microwave using the Hot Mitts and place on a heat resistant surface. Cool the kiln on a heat resistant surface for at least 30 to 40 minutes with the lid on. WARNING: Removing the lid or peeking under the lid during the cooling will result in your piece cracking. Glass remains hot for a long time handle with great caution.
    
9. Cool the glass completely. Remove the kiln paper under running water. If kiln paper becomes trapped, use a toothpick or a piece of wire to clear the hole. Dry the glass with a soft cloth.
   
    
    
10. Tie a Butterfly knot as shown below with both cords together. Leave both cords with a 2” loop above the knot.
     
11. How to tie a Butterfly knot :  Thread all four ends through one tube bead. Now thread all four ends into the top and out the bottom openings of the fused glass. Use a dab of glue on the cords at the base of the fused glass. Thread a tube bead through the four ends. Cinch the bottom tube bead up to the bottom of the glass. When the glue is dry, it will secure the bead & glass in place. Slip one bead on each cord, secure with an Overhand knot.
