I love patterns that are stitched up on the bias, just like the original Grandma's Favorite Knit dishcloth! Simple increasing to desired width, continue crocheting evenly for desired length, then decreasing to the end. I like the self-striping Christmas cotton yarn used in the photo. Try choosing other self-striping colored yarns for different season table runners. Longer color stripes work better than shorter ones.

How many stitches do I chain? How to increase/decrease. I'm new to crochet and need to know this

This pattern is crocheted on the bias, so it starts out with just two chains. You will increase the width of the runner by adding another two or more stitches (instead of one) into the next chain or single crochet. (Ex 2 sc in first sc) To decrease you will draw up a loop in next 2 stitches, yo, draw through all three loops (sc2tog-single crochet 2 together). Pattern will let you know how many stitches to increase or decrease. That's all there is to it! Hope this helps!
