Rustic Pillow for Mom
Use simple appliqué and embroidery to create a rustic looking pillow for Mom this Mother's Day. This pillow will remind Mom of the pictures you made her when you were little. Handmade pillow craft designed by Tina Johnson.
Materials:
- Plain Fabric
- Pattern Fabric(s)
- Pillow Form
- Circle Pattern
- Sewing Machine
- Thread
- Pattern
Instructions:
Cut out one yellow circle. I used the bottom of my water bottle for a pattern. Cut out as many flower circles you want. My Mom has 3 Kids. I used 3. I used my biggest spool of thread for a pattern. Cut out Pillow front and back. I used a piece of computer paper for a pattern. If you have lots of flowers cut bigger pillow front and back pieces.
Working on the piece of fabric for the front of the pillow sew on your yellow circle (sun) in the top left or right corner keeping in mind a ¼ inch seam allowance. I used orange thread to zig-zag around it.
Lay your flowers on the pillow front next and mark with a pencil were the base of each stem should start.
Sew your first stem. You could print the this pattern for help. Once the stem is done place the flower over the top edge of the stem and zig-zag around it.
Make Another Stem. Add the flower circle to the top. Repeat until all flowers are made. Leave as is or stitch lines in the leaves to make the veins in the leaves. Add buttons to flower centers if you like. I used two pink and a blue. My Mom has two girls and a boy.
Lay the pillow front on top of the pillow back. You should now see the back side of the pillow front. Sew around the pillow. ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave an opening for stuffing. Turn right side out, stuff with fiber fill, and stitch to opening closed.
Either use a small gift tag card or a piece of card stock for your card. On the left side of the card write the message you see to the left side of the card in the above picture. On the right side of the card put your message to your mom.
Cut a 6 inch piece of embroidery thread and thread it through a needle. Put the needle through the corner of the pillow and remove the needle. Thread the embroidery thread through the whole in the card (use a hole punch to make hole through card). Tie and trim embroidery thread.
Give your pillow to your mom with a hug!

Great idea if you are a sewer. . .I teach 8 and 9 year olds at church and I have them use a white pillowcase and fabric markers. . .then it really is a drawing like the make themselves. Mom's love it.
