Yo-Yo Bell Christmas Ornaments

Materials:

Dual Duty® Button & Carpet thread Art 250 or S950)
Christmas Print Fabrics *: scraps or fat quarters
Polyester fiberfill
Jingle bells
Pattern [pdf]

* We used Hallmark Christmas from FreeSpirit Fabrics.

Instructions:

For each ornament, cut circles 1 through 4 from the assorted Christmas fabrics (see pattern). Sew a hand running stitch around the edges of each circle for gathering. Place a small amount of fiberfill in center of circle, then pull thread to gather edges. Secure thread.
Stack the yo-yos, having the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Starting at the top of the yo-yo tree, push threaded needle down through the center of all four yo-yos. Slip the bell over the needle and hold it at the bottom of the largest yo-yo. Bring the needle back up through the center of the tree and take a stitch to secure. Do not cut thread.
Take another stitch leaving a 4" loop for hanging the ornament; take a stitch to secure. Do not cut thread.
Cut a 15 inch piece of ribbon. Place center of ribbon over last stitch and take a stitch through ribbon to hold in place. Secure thread and cut. Tie a bow in the ribbon.

Oh this is a great idea, I had made pumpkins using this technique but never thought to do a tree, just by using more yoyos to give it the triangle shape. I have plenty of green holiday fabric this would work well for! I suppose you could adapt the size of the circles for the yoyos to make any size tree you desire! Great idea for ornaments as well as putting one on top,of a package as part of the gift wrap...as an extra little gift! Add a little twine or metalic rope for garland for,further prettiness! Super idea!

Minny, if you click on the word "Pattern" in the article, you'll get the pattern for the circles to cut. The circles in the pattern actually measure 5 1/8", 4 1/16", 3 1/8" and 2 1/8". Roughly, those would make the following finished yo-yo sizes: 2 1/4", 1 3/4", 1 1/4", and 3/4". However, you can make them any size you want and as many layers as you want. I've made these in the past with seven yo-yos and they turned out great!

Do you use whatever size circles you want for this or are there certain sizes that work best? When my kids were babies, I made them clowns using these yo yos. They were so cute & the kids loved them.

This is a neat ornament. Some years ago I saw a pattern in a craft magazine for a valence made with yoyos. Made it in springysummery colors and then a red and green one like a poinsettia. I like yoyos.
