Simple Border Pot Holder and Dishcloth

This simple kitchen crochet pattern from Lily Sugar n' Cream creates a pot holder and dishcloth set with contrasting borders. This is an attractive kitchen set for a house warming gift or your own home.

Simple Pot Holder and Dishcloth

Materials:

Yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream 4 Ply (Solids 2.5 oz/70.9 g/Ombres 2 oz/56.7 g) 1 ball of each color makes 2 dishcloths when MC and A are reversed as illustrated.

Pot Holder:
Main Color (MC) 1 ball
Contrast A 1 ball

Dish Cloth:
Main Color (MC) 1 ball
Contrast A 1 ball
Crochet Hooks: Pot Holder: Size 4.00 mm (U.S. 6) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. Dish Cloth: Size 4.50 mm (U.S. 7) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Size:
Pot Holder: Finished Size: Approx 8” x 8” [20.5 x 20.5 cm]
Dish Cloth: Finished Size: Approx 11” x 11” [28 x 28 cm]

Gauge:
Pot Holder: 15 sts and 16 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in sc with 4.00 mm hook.
Dish Cloth: 8 loops and 16 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in loop pat with 4.50 mm hook.

Instructions:

Pot Holder: Back: With MC and 4.00 mm hook, ch 29.
Foundation row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Ch 1. Turn. 28 sts.
1st row: 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Ch 1. Turn.
This row forms pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures approx 8 ins [20.5 cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Do not turn.
Next row: Ch 1. Work 22 sc along side edge, 3 sc in first st of lower edge, 1 sc in each of next 26 sts along lower edge, 3 sc in next st, 22 sts along side edge, 3 sc in first st of top edge, 1 sc in each of next 26 sts along top edge, 3 sc in next st. Ss to 1st ch 1. Fasten off.

Front: With A, work as given for Back.

Edging: With WS tog, proceed as follows:
1st round: Join MC to any st. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 round sc, inc at corners as before. Fasten off.
2nd round: Join A to any st, work 1 round sc, inc at corners as before. Fasten off.
3rd round: With MC work as given for 2nd round.

Dish Cloth: With MC and 4.50 mm hook, ch 42.
Foundation row: (RS). 1 sc in 4th ch from hook. *Ch 2. Miss next ch. 1 sc in next ch. Rep from * to end of ch. Turn. 20 loops.
1st row: Ch 3. *1 sc in next ch 2 loop. Ch 2. Rep from * to last ch 2 loop. 1 sc in ch 3 loop. Turn.
This row forms pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 8 ins [20.5 cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Fasten off.

Border: With RS facing, join A to ch 3 loop at end of last row.
1st round: Ch 1. *(1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in corner loop - corner made. Ch 2. (1 sc in next loop. Ch 2) 19 times along side. Rep from * 3 times more. Ss to first sc.
2nd round: *Work corner loop. Ch 2. **1 sc in next loop. Ch 2. Rep from ** to next corner. Rep from * 3 times more. Fasten off.

I love the matching patterns here for a potholder and dish cloth. This is such a great idea. It would make the perfect gift for a newly wed couple, or new homeowners. There are also so many color combinations, you can make so many sets and keep them on hand for a quick gift.

It doesn't get any easier than this, that's for sure. Pattern reads nicely- no confusion there. A nice picture for reference. I think this is another one of those alternative "first timer/beginner" crocheter projects. How satisfying this would be for a young girl to make this for her mother?!

I am new to crocheting. In the pot holder, the part that says "Next row Ch 1. Work 22 sc along side edge, 3 sc in first st of lower edge, 1 sc in each of next 26 sts along lower edge, 3 sc in next st, 22 sts along side edge, 3 sc in first st of top edge, 1 sc in each of next 26 sts along top edge, 3 sc in next st. Ss to 1st ch 1. Fasten off." I am completely lost on this - my side is ALOT longer than 22 stitches but not long enough to do 22 stitches then another 26. They don't look like normal stitches (see the edge that I am supposed to be working on now - in the pic below)

on the dishcloth where do you get the 20 loops and can someone explain this also when it says repeat pattern are you repeating just row 1 not a hard directions but cant get the 20 loops and dont know wht row to repeat want to make this so hope to hear form someone soon

When you chain 42 and single crochet in 4th chain from hook that is the first loop, then you chain 2 skip the next chain space and single crochet in next chain till the end and you'll get 20 loops. Row 1: chain three and single crochet in the chain 2 space chain 2 single crochet in next chain 2 space, to the end, turn and repeat the pattern for the next rows until the pattern is 8 inches. I hope this makes sense and it helps you out.

Can you explain to me what you mean by WS and explain again about putting both sides together - do I do both the exact same including border? Thank you. Maxine

I have not made this, but reading the directions "WS" would be wrong sides. You want to make 2 pieces one in the main color (MC) and one in the contrast color (A), you will then place them wrong sides "WS" together and do the edging thru both thicknesses to join them as one piece. Hope this helps!

Crochet hook size 4.00 mm is a G-6, however a 4.50 mm is a 7 and has no letter it is between a G-6 and a H-8. Remember, you can use any hook that gives you the proper gauge however, gauge would not be critical with this project. Hope this helps!

I tried to make this dish cloth.. could not find a 4.5mm crochet hook. Did find 4.25. No matter how I have crocheted this dish cloth it does not come out to be a square. The length is 10 inches before the edges are added on. Agreed it could and will make a nice gift, but it is hard to make it a square.
