Early Bird Afghan

Rise and shine to a beautiful summer morning with this Early Bird Afghan. Made up of several crocheted granny squares, this crocheted afghan pattern is perfect for curling up with an early morning cup of coffee. Lay it out on your bed to help bring some bright colors to your bedroom or drape it over a couch to add a touch of spring or summer to your front room or living room. Great for all levels of crochet fans, this afghan is easy to work up and assemble, making it the perfect weekend project.

Materials:

  • 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver yarn in White
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Petal Pink
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Aruba Sea
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Orchid
  • 4.5 mm (US G-6) crochet hook or size needed for gauge

 

Gauge: Square measures 8 ¼” across    

 

Instructions:     
Throw Measures:   44” x 53”

Squares (Make 30)

Early Bird Afghan                       

  1. Round 1: With white ch 4 and form a ring, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dcs in ring, ch 2] 3 times, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  2. Round 2: Join petal pink any ch 2 space, ch 3, (2 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in same space, *(3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in next ch 2 space, repeat from * twice, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.
     
  3. Round 3: Slip stitch in next 2 dcs and into ch 2 space, ch 3, (2 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in same space, *3 dcs in space between next two 3 dc groups, ** (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in next ch 2 corner space, repeat from * twice and from * to **once, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  4. Round 4: Join aruba sea in any ch 2 corner space, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dcs) in same space, *[1 dc in each of next 3 dcs, 1 dc in space between next two 3 dc groups] twice, 1 dc in each of next 3 dcs, ** (2 dcs, ch 2, 2 dcs) in next ch 2 corner space, repeat from * twice and from * to ** once, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  5. Round 5: Join white in any ch 2 space, 3 scs in same space, [1 sc in each dc across, 3 scs in next ch 2 corner space] around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
     
  6. Round 6: Join orchid in center sc of any corner 3 sc group, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dcs) in same space, [dc in each sc across to next corner, (2 dcs, ch 2, 2 dcs) in center sc of 3 sc group] around, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  7. Round 7: With white (sc, ch 3, sc) in any corner ch 2 space, *(ch 3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc) 3 times, ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc) 3 times, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch 2 space, repeat from * around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.

Joining of Squares

  1. With white whip stitch squares together having 6 rows of 5 squares each as follows:  Whip stitch squares together sewing every 2nd stitch.  Whip stitch rows together sewing every 2nd stitch, making a loop when sewing the seam joinings.

Edging

  1. Round 1: With aruba sea (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in any corner ch 3 space, *[3 dcs in each ch 3 space, 3 dcs in joining of squares] across to next corner, (3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs) in corner ch 3 space, repeat from * around entire throw, join to beginning dc and fasten off.
     
  2. Round 2: With white (sc, ch 3, dc) in any corner ch 2 space, *[skip 2 dcs, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next dc] across to next corner, (sc, ch 3, dc) in corner ch 2 space, repeat from * around entire throw, join to beginning sc and fasten off.

Sometimes what really makes the project can be something as simple as the border used or how in this case the granny squares are joined. These granny squares are joined with the whip stitch. Beautiful. The granny square does it again. This early bird afghan would be a great addition to your home decor or as a gift to a valued family member or friend. You would only have to tailor the color to the recipient and I am positive they would love to have this to display in their own home.
