Baby Granny Three Ways

Version 2
- 1 ball Red Heart TLC "Baby Amoré" yarn in Baby Print (B)
- 1 ball Red Heart TLC "Baby Amoré" yarn in Yellow (A)
- 2 balls Red Heart TLC "Baby Amoré" yarn in Orchid (C)
- 5.5mm [US I-9] crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Version 3
- 1 ball Red Heart "Baby Clouds" yarn in Cloud (A)
- 1 ball Red Heart "Baby Clouds" yarn in Serene Green (C)
- 2 balls Red Heart "Baby Clouds" yarn in Sunny Multi (B)
- 10mm [US N-15] crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Gauge:
- Version 1: Rnds 1-4 = 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
- Version 2: Rnds 1-4 = 5 1/2” x 5 1/2”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
- Version 3: Rnds 1-2 = 5” x 5”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Special Abbreviations:
- X-st (worked over next 2 sts) = Skip next dc, dc in next dc, working behind dc just completed, dc in skipped dc.
- X-st in ch-1 space = Dc in ch-1 space, working behind dc just completed, dc in same space.
- Beginning corner = (ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in same space.
- Corner = (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in same space.
Instructions:
Version 1
Color Order: 4 rnds CB, [3 rnds CA, 3 rnds CC, 3 rnds CB] 3 times, 2 more rnds CB, 1 rnd CC.
Afghan measures 36” x 36”.
- With CB, ch 4; join with a slip st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), [dc in ring, ch 1] 7 times; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-4.
- Rnd 2: (Slip st, beginning corner) all in next ch-1 space, [2 dc in next ch-1 space, corner in next ch-1 space] 3 times, 2 dc in last ch-1 space; join in top of ch-3.
- Rnd 3: Slip st in next dc, ch 3, working behind ch just made, dc in same st as joining (beginning X-st made), * (X-st, ch 1, X-st) all in next ch-1 space, work X-st across; repeat from * around; join.
- Rnd 4: Slip st in space before next dc (in middle of X-st), ch 3, dc in same space, 2 dc in middle of next X-st, * corner in ch-1 space, 2 dc in middle of each X-st across; repeat from * around; join. Fasten off.
- Rnd 5: Join next color in any corner ch-1 space; beginning corner in same space, * working in back loops only, dc in each dc across **, corner in ch-1 space; repeat from * around, end at **; join.
- Rnds 6 and 7: Repeat Rnds 3 and 4.
- Rnds 8-31: Repeat Rnds 5-7 eight times. At end of Rnd 31, do not fasten off CB.
- Rnds 32 and 33: Ch 3, dc in each dc around and work corner in each corner ch-1 space; join – 130 dc between corner spaces. At end of Rnd 33, fasten off CB.
- Rnd 34: Join CC in any ch-1 corner space; ch 3, 6 dc in same space, * skip next dc, slip st in next dc, [skip next 3 dc, 7 dc in next dc, skip next 3 dc, slip st in next dc] 16 times **, 7 dc in ch-1 space; repeat from * around, end at **; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Version 2
Afghan measures 38” x 38”.
- Rnds 1-28: Work same as Version 1 except work in both loops throughout. At end of Rnd 28, do NOT fasten off CC.
- Rnds 29 and 30: Ch 3, dc in each dc across sides and work corner in ch-1 spaces; join.
- Rnd 31: Work 1 rnd Reverse sc; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Version 3
Color Order: [2 rnds each B, A, C] twice, 3 rnds B.
Afghan measures 36” x 36”.
- Rnds 1 and 2: Work same as Version 1. Fasten off.
- Rnd 3: Join next color in any ch-1 space; beginning corner in same space, * dc in each dc across **, corner in ch-1 space; repeat from * around, end at **; join.
- Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, * corner in ch-1 space, dc across next side; repeat from * around; join. Fasten off.
- Rnds 5-14: Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 five times. At end of Rnd 14, do not fasten off B.
- Rnd 15: Ch 3, dc in each dc to corner space, * corner in space, dc in each dc across; repeat from * around; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

This is so exciting to make, there are three versions. I'd like to make all three. Great as a christening or shower gift for either a baby girl or a baby boy. The pattern is just right on the same page. I've pinned this project for future reference.

I think this is a really vibrantly colored blanket, and so it should be a favorite for any growing baby. I make baby blankets regularly, 16 grandchildren and now lots of my daughter's friends are having babies too.

I love that this afghan has three vesions. It looks like it is quick and when all of your daughters' friends are having babies, there are a lot of requests for me to make baby afghans.

I really like this one better. To me it is a lot quicker to make and if you have to stop quickly its easy to figure out where you are at.

I like this one better because I'm a little more partial to granny squares. They are easier to put together and there are so many variations color-wise and pattern-wise.

Granny 3 ways is my choice. Colourful and no sewing up!! Make it while watching TV or talking, no problem.

This version is one of those mindless patters that are so very easy to do. I like the look of Granny squares---but hate tucking in the ends of blocks! This would be the one for me!

Cannot tell you how many times I've used this pattern, not only for baby blankets, but larger afghans for sofas, chairs, beds, etc. It's an easy pattern, you can choose the colors and yarn and it works up fast. Kind of a 'no-brainer' that can be done while watching tv or listening to music. Love it.

love this version as sewing squares together is not my thing. You can make several by changing colors and they never look the same!

I love this little baby afghan. I don't like to sew squares together. This type of afghan goes together quickly and there is so much you can do to change it up just by color changes. jch1224

These make me think of the "never ending granny square" pattern I've used for years. I like to do 3 dc + ch 1 instead of the 2 dc + ch 1. I think it makes it more solid-looking.

I love doing an all in one granny square!! I haven't done this pattern but I have done a lot of one big granny square, I use white cloud yarns and they turn out wonderful. I know some kids 5 years old still using their blankets I made them.

I printed out the directions, but do not understand the "X" stitch or the corner instructions It's very pretty and want to make it for a present.
